IFS Therapy South Manchester & Online

What is IFS?

Internal Family System (IFS) is based on the idea that we are all made up of different "parts": an internal family where each part has its own voice, fears and way of trying to keep you safe. Many of us move through life feeling pulled in different directions; part of you wants to move on, part of you feels stuck, part of you craves connection while another keeps people at arm's length. In IFS, these aren't contradictions or flaws. They are qualities that developed for very good reasons, often in response to painful or overwhelming experiences earlier in life.

Some parts take on protective roles, they might show up as self-criticism, people-pleasing, anxiety, anger or emotional numbness. These parts worked hard to shield you from pain, and in many ways they did their job. But over time, their strategies can start to feel limiting, exhausting or difficult to understand. When we learn to listen to these parts rather than fight them, real and lasting change becomes possible.

What Happens in IFS Sessions?

In the beginning of the IFS process, much of the work is about identifying the parts that show up most often and understanding the role they play. This stage can bring a lot of insight on its own. Many people find that being able to name what is happening inside them starts to create a little more breathing room.

Over time, we begin to work more directly with the parts that are carrying pain or trauma. This might involve gently approaching memories or experiences that have felt too difficult to look at before. We always do this at your own pace, with care and without pressure. Rather than reliving or re-traumatising, IFS offers a way to heal these parts by helping them feel truly seen, heard and unburdened from what they have been carrying.

As the deeper work progresses, many people notice real shifts. Patterns that once felt impossible to change begin to loosen and relationships feel easier. There is often a growing sense of steadiness, of knowing yourself more fully and of feeling more at home in your own life.
